Bug Fixes, New Features, and Next Features

After some testing by folks in PIGSquad and my students, I was able to stomp some annoying quirks and bugs as well as add a few important features.

  • ADDED: In Play Mode, the camera will now zoom in when the view is blocked by something. (Note: this is a test feature. If it ends up being more annoying than anything else, I'll remove it, or change it. I feel like it needs more tweaking to really work nicely.)
  • ADDED: The UI can now be scaled by standard browser zoom shortcuts (Ctrl/Cmd +/-/0), or within the Settings popup (⚙).
  • ADDED: Things can now look like Blocks. This is useful for making doors, since Blocks don't have Action Sequences. Even if set to look like a Block, Things won't look like a Block in Edit Mode, so it's still easy to distinguish as a Thing. However, it will look like a Block when in Play Mode.
  • FIXED: The Slope toolbar icon squashes when hovering over the icon and rotating with R
  • FIXED: You can't actually delete Blocks, Things, and Items. They will go away in the list, and look like they are deleted, but come back when the list refreshes.

So what's next? Well, all the features I feel need to be in place before PIGCON. 😅 At PIGCON, I'll be giving a game-making workshop for youth using Lil' Bitty Things, so I want to make sure it's ready. Here are the next features I'll be working on adding:

  • Enabling the Jump to Player button on the Player Editor
  • Editing player respawn positions for Rooms. (Useful if you have a Room that has difficult terrain to traverse and you want to let the player respawn and try again if they fall.)
  • Allowing you to choose if the Player respawns or the game ends if the Player falls off the edge of the level
  • Having the camera snap to the Player's position immediately when switching rooms, so the camera doesn't slide over to the new position
  • Make it so Items can hold negative amounts
  • Warn the user about deleting a Room, Block, Thing, or Item
  • Warn the user when starting a new game
  • Always save current state to the browser's local storage. This will make it so if you come back later, you'll be able to pick up where you left off. Or if your browser is inadvertently closed or crashes, you won't lose anything.
  • Keyboard shortcuts! I really want this.
  • Ability to toggle showing very clearly which blocks are walls and which are not.
